Disability Heritage Guide: Te Whare Pāremata

Parliament hasn’t always been built with accessibility in mind.

The area that we now know as the Parliament grounds in Wellington was first landscaped in the 1890s. Various buildings and wings have been developed since then, including the iconic Beehive which was built in 1979.

But now, thanks to work led by Stew Sexton, Parliament’s Senior Accessibility Advisor, Te Whare Pāremata positive steps are being made to make politics more accessible for MPs and members of the public.

Accessibility notes:

• Four seats have been removed in the debating chamber, creating dedicated space for wheelchair users and MPs using mobility aids. 

• Flexible microphones have been added making them easier to reach, whether your sitting or standing up.

• Call buttons have been added to members' seats, so you can indicate when you're ready to speak in the House while seated instead of following the standard protocol of standing up.

• TV screens has been added to incorporate real-time captions during debates.

• Dedicated iPads are available for members who are hard-of-hearing members, giving them direct access to captions at their desk.

• The Select Committee Submissions process is also now more accessible for Deaf, disabled and neurodivergent people. This includes providing clearer information about what to expect, developing guidance and resources for submitters, opportunities to share accessibility requirements early, and supporting accommodations such as NZSL interpreters, captioning, accessible hearing spaces and alternative ways to participate.
